Violent extremist groups often retain members not solely through ideological conviction but through psychological manipulation, identity restructuring, trauma bonding, and suppression of cognitive autonomy. This paper examines how extremist organizations sustain loyalty by altering emotional regulation, restricting independent thought, exploiting group identity, and reinforcing propaganda-based cognitive frameworks. The proposed Coercive Identity and Cognitive Control Model (CICCM) outlines how exploitation of trauma, moral narratives, and isolation can suppress critical reasoning. The article emphasizes how these insights can support deradicalization, rehabilitation, and reintegration—not recruitment or strategy improvements. Ethical considerations stress human rights, voluntary disengagement, and trauma-informed support.
