FORENSIC EVALUATIONS DURING COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted legal systems and forensic mental health practices worldwide. Public health restrictions, court closures, and heightened health risks necessitated rapid adaptation in the manner forensic evaluations were conducted. Traditional in-person assessments were frequently replaced by remote or hybrid models, raising important questions regarding reliability, validity, ethics, and due process. This research article examines the impact of COVID-19 on forensic psychological and psychiatric evaluations. Drawing upon empirical studies, professional guidelines, and practitioner reports, the paper analyzes changes in assessment methods, challenges associated with tele-forensic practice, and implications for legal decision-making. Ethical considerations, access to justice issues, and long-term consequences for forensic practice are discussed. The article concludes by proposing best-practice recommendations for conducting forensic evaluations during public health emergencies and beyond.
