Abstract

Moral injury occurs when individuals experience psychological distress after participating in, witnessing, or being unable to prevent actions that violate their deeply held moral beliefs. While the concept is widely studied in military contexts, law enforcement officers face similar ethical conflicts during high-pressure situations involving use-of-force decisions, organizational corruption, moral compromises, and community mistrust. This paper examines the causes, psychological impact, and institutional factors contributing to moral injury among police personnel. Using a hypothetical multi-agency dataset, quantitative trends demonstrate a strong association between unresolved moral trauma and burnout, emotional withdrawal, PTSD, and misconduct cycles. A policy framework is proposed to support ethical resilience and trauma-informed policing.
