Female Inmates: Trauma-Informed Rehabilitation

Abstract

Women in correctional facilities disproportionately experience prior trauma—including childhood abuse, domestic violence, sex trafficking, substance-related trauma, and psychological assault—yet most prison systems are structured for male offenders, neglecting gender-specific rehabilitation needs. This research examines trauma-informed rehabilitation frameworks designed specifically for female inmates, integrating psychological care, social reintegration, educational interventions, and post-release support. Using case analysis, rehabilitation model comparison, and trauma-behavior correlation studies, this paper proposes the Trauma-Informed Rehabilitation Continuum (TIRC) to guide correctional systems toward holistic recovery. Findings indicate that trauma-informed interventions reduce recidivism, improve mental health, and enhance reintegration outcomes.
