Abstract

Fake news is a form of intentionally deceptive information designed to manipulate public opinion, influence behavior, or shape social narratives. Psychological manipulation embedded in misinformation exploits cognitive biases, emotional triggers, identity-driven reasoning, and information overload in digital ecosystems. This paper examines the behavioral psychology behind fake news production and dissemination, not to enable misinformation creation, but to support prevention and media resilience. A conceptual model, the Cognitive Manipulation Misinformation Cycle (CMMC), is proposed to show how emotional arousal, bias reinforcement, and algorithmic amplification jointly fuel belief adoption. The study emphasizes countermeasures including digital literacy, critical thinking education, platform policy, and ethical communication frameworks.
