Abstract

Background: Professional authority in forensic and medico-legal work depends not only on technical competence but also on how expertise, confidence, communication and credibility are perceived. Age may strengthen expertise and seniority, while gendered expectations may alter the interpretation of authority. This review examines gendered ageing through the specific lens of expert credibility, behavioural attribution and professional legitimacy. Methods: A structured multidisciplinary review informed by scoping-review principles integrated evidence from workplace ageism, gender and leadership, menopause-at-work, expert-witness credibility, forensic workforce research, technological change and Indian workplace contexts. Results: The evidence does not support a uniform disadvantage model. Accumulated experience can increase judgement, confidence and expert authority, yet equivalent professional behaviour may acquire different meanings according to gender and age. Experimental work on leadership and expert witnesses demonstrates context-dependent differences in evaluations of assertiveness, anger, warmth, qualifications and credibility. Menopause is best separated into a functional pathway, in which symptoms may require workplace support, and an attributional pathway, in which known or assumed menopausal status may influence interpretations of behaviour. Conclusions: Gendered professional ageing is best understood as an interaction between accumulated professional capital and the social interpretation of authority. Research should test whether increasing experience confers equivalent credibility benefits across gender and identify conditions under which attributional bias interrupts the conversion of expertise into professional legitimacy.
